Advanced biofuel production

The creation of UPM BioVerno renewable diesel from wood-based tall oil is an advanced biofuel production process. This innovative production process has been developed in the UPM Biorefinery Research and Development Centre in Lappeenranta, Finland.

UPM is a frontrunner in the transformation of the forest industry – our goal is to maximise the efficient use of wood and the lifecycle of all our wood-based raw materials.

Crude tall oil as renewable raw material for biofuel production

Crude tall is a natural extract of wood, mainly from conifers. The renewable raw material comes from sustainably managed forests. Crude tall oil is gained as a result of the separation process of fibrous material from wood. It is a residue of pulp manufacturing.

In Lappeenranta, a significant part of this renewable raw material comes from UPM’s own pulp mills in Finland – like the Kaukas mill site next door. The UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery is a minor addition to the overall total demand for crude tall oil and is a new innovative way to use that residue, which is often burned for energy.
