Material efficiency is a key factor in making advanced biofuels, with solutions based on the use of waste and residues enabling increasingly sustainable fuel production without compromising global food production or biodiversity.

Renewable wood-based biofuels can substantially reduce transport emissions while maintaining sustainable production methods.

We benefit from the life cycle of wood-based biomass with optimal efficiency. As a raw material, wood provides a very good starting point, as evidenced by the BioVerno fuel made from a residue of pulp production at UPM.

​A model for sustainable development

The UN Global Compact initiative – the world's largest corporate responsibility project – released ground-breaking global sustainability goals in 2015. UPM Biofuels was selected as a model example for the climate change objective, which seeks to prevent climate change and its impacts as a matter of urgency.

The Global Compact gives enterprises a modern framework that helps them guide their strategic objectives and operations for the benefit of society and provides an excellent opportunity for promoting sustainable business. The significance of enterprises, investors and civil society as a positive force for sustainable development is growing all the time, and is expected to play an important role in achieving the goals of sustainable development.

UPM BioVerno is one of 25 unique example cases of Nordic bioeconomy

​The Nordic Bioeconomy Panel under The Nordic Council of Ministers has chosen UPM BioVerno in the Nordic bioeconomy - 25 cases for sustainable change catalogue published in January 2017.

“The Nordic countries are strongly placed to be global leaders in the production and utilisation of bio-resources that will enhance both competitiveness and sustainability. To continuously develop and improve this position we need inspiration and sharing of knowledge and best practices,” says Hörður G. Kristinsson, chair of the Nordic Bioeconomy Panel.

Versatile use of recyclable and renewable wood biomass, combined with innovation, efficiency and responsibility is in the core of UPM’s Biofore strategy.

​UPM BioVerno is the responsible choice

UPM BioVerno can help to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and local pollution significantly compared to conventional fossil diesel. Our biofuels are made from a forest industry residue, so that wood raw material is used with optimal efficiency and there is no need to log additional forest areas for fuel production. UPM BioVerno is also made without diverting raw materials from food production.

When producing alternative biofuels, UPM considers the entire life cycle of wood with a view to securing a more sustainable future. As members of both the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), we are actively engaged in promoting sustainable business practices and standards.
