UPM Biofuels gains the world's first RSB low indirect land use change (ILUC) risk certification for its feedstocks System Account2018-04-24T13:03:21Z

(UPM, Helsinki, 24 April 2018 at 13:00 EET) - UPM Biofuels' continuous efforts for a more sustainable supply chain and operations has been recognized by the world's first RSB (Roundtable of Sustainable Biomaterials) low ILUC (indirect land use change) risk certification. The certificate was received for crude tall oil, the feedstock used for UPM BioVerno renewable fuels production at the Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland, and for UPM's cultivation of the Brassica carinata oil crop in Uruguay.

The RSB low ILUC risk certification is an additional proof of sustainability for UPM Biofuels, showing that the company's use of crude tall oil and Brassica carinata oil for biofuels production has a low risk of causing indirect emissions elsewhere. The low ILUC risk RSB certification places UPM Biofuels' raw materials, crude tall oil and Brassica carinata oil in the category of most sustainable feedstocks.

Brassica carinata oil from UPM Biofuels' feedstock production in Uruguay has a low risk of causing indirect land use change emissions when used for biofuels production.

"We are honoured to receive this first of a kind low ILUC recognition for our feeds. It gives further third party proof of UPM Biofuels' commitment to produce top of the line sustainable biofuels and biomaterials for our customers," comments Maiju Helin, Head of Sustainability and Market Development at UPM Biofuels.

UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery uses crude tall oil, a wood-based residue of pulp production, for making advanced biofuels.

Crude tall oil (CTO) is a residue of pulp production originating in sustainable forestry. The new low ILUC risk certification process, a voluntary addition to RSB certification, has confirmed that the amount of CTO required by UPM BioVerno for production can be used without diverting it from other uses.

The secondary cropping concept for Brassica carinata, a non-edible oilseed crop grown outside the main cultivation period, has been tested and developed by UPM Biofuels in Uruguay. This new certification verifies that Brassica carinata oil from UPM Biofuels' feedstock production in Uruguay has a low risk of causing indirect land use change emissions when used for biofuels production.

"The RSB is proud to count UPM among the visionary biofuel producers that are not only RSB certified for their wood-based biofuels in Lappeenranta, Finland and Brassica carinata cultivation in Uruguay, but have now received the world's first RSB low ILUC risk certification. This shows that their biofuels have not only achieved the requirements of our rigorous standard for sustainability, they have also been verified under this module, meaning they have minimal or zero risk of indirect impacts - such as deforestation or increased food prices - elsewhere in the world. With reduced greenhouse gas emissions which meet the highest standards of sustainability and transparency, as well as demonstrating the lowest impacts on nature and food production, these are the biofuels of the future!" says Rolf Hogan, Executive Director of RSB.

RSB is one of the world's most trusted, valued and peer-reviewed standards for biomaterials. It is one of the European Commission's approved voluntary schemes used to show compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive's sustainability criteria. Additionally, RSB's is the first standard to utilise a low ILUC-risk module for biomass certification. UPM Biofuels' production has been evaluated against this low ILUC requirement, EU RED criteria and the 12 RSB principles, which have been approved by their many stakeholders, including NGOs and UN agencies.

More information:
Maiju Helin, Head of Sustainability and Market Development, UPM Biofuels
Tel. +358 50 325 6046, maiju.helin@upm.com

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM Biofuels
UPM plans to become a major player in high quality, advanced biofuels for transport. UPM Biofuels enters the bioplastics market with new partnersSystem Account2018-03-14T13:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 14 March 2018 at 13:00 EET) - UPM is committed to creating value from sustainable bioinnovations. In addition to renewable diesel, the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery produces renewable naphtha - an excellent raw material for bioplastics. It can be transformed into renewable resins needed to create bioplastics, e.g. for the packaging industry.

Choosing the right packaging solution can make a big difference. Beverage cartons have the lowest CO2 footprint among liquid food packaging today. Now even the plastic coating of cartons can be wood-based - using renewable polyethylene reduces the footprint further.

Elopak, Norway-based company supplying 15 billion cartons around the world each year, joined forces with UPM Biofuels and Dow to offer 100% renewable cartons that are both recyclable and responsibly sourced.

"Every tonne of UPM's wood-based naphtha that Dow converts into bioplastics reduces one tonne of fossil raw materials used. UPM studies opportunities for developing its biofuels business by starting an environmental impact assessment in Kotka, FinlandSystem Account2018-02-05T14:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 5 February 2018 at 14:00 EET) - UPM is studying biofuels development opportunities by starting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a possible biorefinery in Mussalo, Kotka, in south-eastern Finland. The study of a possible Kotka Biorefinery is in the very early stages and the EIA process normally takes approximately one year.

EU and national policies on biofuels will also play an important role in the final assessment of the possible investment.

The EIA study states that the proposed second UPM biorefinery would use a different raw material base and technology than in the current UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery. The Kotka Biorefinery would produce approximately 500,000 tonnes of advanced biofuels for transportation, made from several renewable and sustainable feedstocks.

"We are looking into the use of several new feedstocks that fulfil sustainability criteria, such as wood residues and other sustainable wastes and residues. UPM Biofuels receives Uruguay's first RSB sustainability certification for biofuel feedstockMirja Kemppi, UPM2018-01-15T14:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 15 January 2018 at 14:00 EET) - UPM Biofuels has received a sustainability certificate for the cultivation of the Brassica carinata crop - a new feedstock for biofuel production - in Uruguay. The RSB (The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) certification in biofuel feedstock production complements UPM Biofuels' existing sustainability certifications like ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) and RSB certifications for its UPM BioVerno biofuel production.

"RSB certification acknowledges our strong commitment to sustainability in all operations, now also in biofuel feedstock production with local farmers. This is also the first RSB certificate in Uruguay and creates new sustainable practices for agriculture," says Liisa Ranta, Manager, Sustainability, UPM Biofuels Development.

RSB is one of the European Commission's approved voluntary schemes, which can be used to show compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive's sustainability criteria. In addition to EU RED criteria, the sustainability of biofuels is evaluated against 12 principles which have been approved by a wide variety of stakeholders, including NGOs and UN agencies. In addition to greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels, RSB principles cover biodiversity, human rights and environmental and social responsibility throughout the value chain.

"The RSB commends UPM for its continued commitment to producing sustainable biofuel. UPM supports schooling opportunities of young people at risk of social exclusionSystem Account2017-11-20T11:30:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 20 November 2017 at 11.30 EET) -UPM supports young people whose secondary education is at risk due to the family's low income through Eväitä Elämälle programme by Save the Children organisation. UPM's support is targeted at buying learning materials so that young people can continue their studies regardless of the family's financial situation. The study materials aid will be directed to the local associations of the Save the Children organisation.

In Finland, 15 per cent of young people have not completed upper secondary education by the age of 25. Nearly half of the young people without qualification or education have had to cut or drop their studies due to lack of money. The costs of upper secondary education are caused by learning materials in particular. Study materials aid is provided for the textbooks and other materials, such as work equipment, used at secondary schools and vocational institutions. The goal is that the beneficiaries can complete a matriculation examination or a vocational qualification.

"As a sponsor of Eväitä Elämälle programme we are promoting equality and inclusion among young people as well as increasing their opportunities to build future in their chosen studies.
