UPM joins Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative to enhance sustainability in its supply chainsSystem Account2018-07-05T10:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 5 July 2018 at 10:00 EET) - UPM has joined Together for Sustainability (TfS), a chemical industry initiative that promotes and improves sustainability practises within its supply chains. By joining the initiative the member companies share a wide coverage of supplier data, such as audit reports and sustainability assessments performed by independent experts.

"UPM's traditional businesses are having high exposure to chemical industry supply chain, not only on chemical raw materials but also on equipment and services." says Ilkka Nurmi, Senior Vice President, UPM Sourcing. "While UPM is not a chemical company, we actively work on portfolio transformation and have a great growth potential in biofuels and biochemicals businesses where we are heavily entering the arena of chemistry", he continues.

TfS has established a standard approach for evaluating and improving the sustainabilty performance of suppliers. Evaluation covers key areas such as environmental impact, health and safety, labour and human rights as well as management and governance. The assessments and audits benefit both members and suppliers, who only go through the process once and avoid multiple assessments by different customers.
"We welcome UPM to the TfS Initiative and look forward to working together on our shared vision of improving supply chain sustainability. UPM brings a strong track record in sustainability to the membership base as well as the ambition to work on sustainability together with the TfS members," says Rüdiger Eberhard, TfS President and Senior Vice President, Head of Procurement (CPO) Evonik Industries.

"Responsible sourcing has been high on UPM's agenda for years and we have already done a lot of work to ensure the sustainability of our supply chains. However, the global supply networks are so complex that it's necessary to pool the resources so that everyone can have access for a wider range of supplier sustainability information. This efficiency will enable focus on sustainability improvements in the supply chains. This is what TfS is all about" Nurmi tells. "We are looking forward to start working together with the other TfS members to further develop the initiative, and to make our global supply chains even more sustainable," Ilkka Nurmi concludes.

More on TfS initiative:
https://tfs-initiative.com/

For further information please contact:
Ilkka Nurmi, SVP, UPM Sourcing, tel. +358400287355

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

UPM
UPM leads the forest-based bioindustry into a sustainable, innovation-driven and exciting future across six business areas: UPM Biorefining, UPM Energy, UPM Raflatac, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Communication Papers and UPM Plywood. This shows that their biofuels have not only achieved the requirements of our rigorous standard for sustainability, they have also been verified under this module, meaning they have minimal or zero risk of indirect impacts - such as deforestation or increased food prices - elsewhere in the world. With reduced greenhouse gas emissions which meet the highest standards of sustainability and transparency, as well as demonstrating the lowest impacts on nature and food production, these are the biofuels of the future!" says Rolf Hogan, Executive Director of RSB.

RSB is one of the world's most trusted, valued and peer-reviewed standards for biomaterials. UPM Biofuels enters the bioplastics market with new partnersSystem Account2018-03-14T13:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 14 March 2018 at 13:00 EET) - UPM is committed to creating value from sustainable bioinnovations. In addition to renewable diesel, the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery produces renewable naphtha - an excellent raw material for bioplastics. It can be transformed into renewable resins needed to create bioplastics, e.g. for the packaging industry.

Choosing the right packaging solution can make a big difference. Beverage cartons have the lowest CO2 footprint among liquid food packaging today. UPM studies opportunities for developing its biofuels business by starting an environmental impact assessment in Kotka, FinlandSystem Account2018-02-05T14:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 5 February 2018 at 14:00 EET) - UPM is studying biofuels development opportunities by starting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a possible biorefinery in Mussalo, Kotka, in south-eastern Finland. The study of a possible Kotka Biorefinery is in the very early stages and the EIA process normally takes approximately one year.

EU and national policies on biofuels will also play an important role in the final assessment of the possible investment.

The EIA study states that the proposed second UPM biorefinery would use a different raw material base and technology than in the current UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery. The Kotka Biorefinery would produce approximately 500,000 tonnes of advanced biofuels for transportation, made from several renewable and sustainable feedstocks.

"We are looking into the use of several new feedstocks that fulfil sustainability criteria, such as wood residues and other sustainable wastes and residues. UPM Biofuels receives Uruguay's first RSB sustainability certification for biofuel feedstockMirja Kemppi, UPM2018-01-15T14:00:00Z
(UPM, Helsinki, 15 January 2018 at 14:00 EET) - UPM Biofuels has received a sustainability certificate for the cultivation of the Brassica carinata crop - a new feedstock for biofuel production - in Uruguay. The RSB (The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) certification in biofuel feedstock production complements UPM Biofuels' existing sustainability certifications like ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) and RSB certifications for its UPM BioVerno biofuel production.

"RSB certification acknowledges our strong commitment to sustainability in all operations, now also in biofuel feedstock production with local farmers. This is also the first RSB certificate in Uruguay and creates new sustainable practices for agriculture," says Liisa Ranta, Manager, Sustainability, UPM Biofuels Development.

RSB is one of the European Commission's approved voluntary schemes, which can be used to show compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive's sustainability criteria. In addition to EU RED criteria, the sustainability of biofuels is evaluated against 12 principles which have been approved by a wide variety of stakeholders, including NGOs and UN agencies. In addition to greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels, RSB principles cover biodiversity, human rights and environmental and social responsibility throughout the value chain.

"The RSB commends UPM for its continued commitment to producing sustainable biofuel. They have demonstrated leadership in the sector being the first to receive RSB certification for the production of biofuel from woodbased feedstocks and are now leading the way in Uruguay with their Brassica carinata certification. This results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions while meeting the highest standards of sustainability and transparency, " says Rolf Hogan, the RSB's Executive Director.

Brassica carinata winter cropping in Paysandu, Uruguay.

Brassica carinata is an oilseed crop specially designed for sustainable production of biofuels. UPM Biofuels has been developing and testing a new type of biofuel feedstock concept by growing Brassica carinata as a secondary crop in South America. The crop works well in the climatic and agricultural conditions of Uruguay and has been tested by local farmers. Brassica carinata cultivation adds value to their use of existing agricultural land as it will be used productively also in winter.

For further information please contact:
Liisa Ranta, Manager, Sustainability, UPM Biofuels Development, tel. +358 40 582 9338

UPM, Media Relations
Mon-Fri 9.00-16.00 EET
tel. +358 40 588 3284
media@upm.com

RSB certification
The RSB is valued and peer-reviewed organization that offers advisory, membership and certification services for sustainable biomaterials on a global scale.
