EU Commission VP Maros Šefcovic visits UPM Kaukas: focus on renewable energy and climate change mitigationSystem Account2017-10-13T10:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 13 October 2017 at 10&#58;00 EET) - UPM was honoured to welcome European Commission Vice President <strong class="hugin">Maroš Šefcovic</strong>, responsible for the Energy Union, to the UPM Kaukas Mill site in Lappeenranta Finland today. The visit was hosted by UPM's President and CEO, <strong class="hugin">Jussi Pesonen</strong>.</p> <p class="hugin">During the visit UPM presented its UPM Biofore strategy designed to create sustainable solutions and new innovations from renewable raw materials that provide options to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change. </p> <p class="hugin">Pesonen called for EU regulation that ensures the right framework for companies to invest and provide innovative solutions to reduce emissions.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;The European Union has set a target to be the world leader in renewable energy in the 2020s. UPM is definitely able to support this ambitious goal. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that EU institutions provide long-term regulatory certainty, clear rules on biomass sustainability, and a framework for the increased use of sustainable advanced biofuels in transport,&quot; says Pesonen. </p> <p class="hugin">The EU Commission Vice President toured the UPM Kaukas Mill complex - a unique and versatile bioindustry site producing pulp, paper, timber and biofuels out of renewable wood-based raw materials. UPM tests Carinata sequential cropping concept as part of Biofuels future developmentElina Räihä, UPM2017-06-28T15:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 28 June 2017 at 15&#58;00 EET) - UPM Biofuels is developing a new feedstock concept by growing Brassica carinata as a sequential crop in South America. The Carinata crop produces non-edible oil suitable for biofuels' feedstock and protein for animal feed.</p> <p class="hugin">The sequential cropping concept enables contract farmers to take agricultural land into use outside the main cultivation period, in winter time, without compromising existing food production. This does not cause any land use change, prevents erosion and improves soil quality. Carinata will provide additional income to local farmers, who do not normally have their fields in productive use during winter. In South America UPM grows and tests Carinata with third-party farmers in Uruguay and Brazil.&#160; </p> <p class="hugin"><img width="600" height="400" class="hugin" id="Picture 2" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2116208/119250.jpg" alt="" style="margin-left&#58;0px;" /></p> <p class="hugin"><i class="hugin">Carinata field seeded in early May 2017 in Uruguay. </i></p> <p class="hugin">Carinata is an oilseed crop specially designed for sustainable production of biofuels. UPM has made a long term agreement with Canada-based Brassica Carinata crop developer Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. who utilise non-GMO technologies to improve crop varieties. </p> <p class="hugin">&quot;Sustainable land use is UPM's core competence. We are developing this sequential cropping concept with Carinata as it provides new feedstock solutions for low carbon biofuels without compromising existing food production,&quot; says <b class="hugin">Petri Kukkonen</b>, Head of UPM Biofuels Development. </p> <p class="hugin">Biofuels produced from Carinata oil reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% compared to fossil fuels.&#160; </p> <p class="hugin">&quot;Exploring new feedstocks is part of UPM Biofuels' long term development. Ecofys study on Crude Tall Oil markets and availability: sufficient supply for advanced biofuels, biomaterials and energy usageSystem Account2017-06-20T13:00:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 20 June 2017 at 13&#58;00 EET) - UPM Biofuels commissioned a study from leading international energy and climate consultancy Ecofys - A Navigant Company, entitled &quot;<b class="hugin">Crude tall oil low ILUC risk assessment&#58; comparing global supply and demand&quot;.</b> The study looked into crude tall oil (CTO) availability, current usage, whether the feedstock creates an additional demand for land, and whether the use of CTO in advanced biofuels can cause distortive effects in the markets.</p> <p class="hugin">The recently conducted Ecofys study concludes that &quot;the <i class="hugin">CTO market is not overly tight and potential surplus of about 850,000 tonnes of CTO is still available that could be tapped into&quot;</i>. The total potential CTO supply is around 2.6 million tonnes. Current actual CTO demand is approximately 1.75 million tonnes, of which about 1.4 million tonnes is used by distillers and roughly 230,000 tonnes for biofuels. Ecofys also concludes that <i class="hugin">&quot;CTO use for biofuels did not cause displacement effects elsewhere, and hence CTO, a non-land using process residue, is a low ILUC (Indirect Land Use Change) risk material.&quot;</i></p> <p class="hugin"><img alt="" class="hugin" height="418" id="Picture 1" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2114413/118994.jpg" width="627" /></p> <p class="hugin">UPM considered it necessary to investigate the impact of UPM Biofuels' market entry, and to verify whether UPM BioVerno production may have impacted negatively on the CTO market. The study brings necessary information into the debate concerning raw material availability for various end-uses such as advanced biofuels and biomaterials.</p> <p class="hugin">Current debate relating to the EU's Renewable Energy Directive puts raw material availability of feedstock into focus as most materials tend to have alternative usage. &quot;It is important to UPM that we can showcase that our entry into the markets has had limited impacts on the overall market, while it has enabled UPM to become the key producer of wood-based biofuels and products for the biochemical industry. We believe there is tremendous innovation potential in advanced biofuels,&quot; says <b class="hugin">Marko Janhunen</b>, Vice President, Stakeholder Relations from UPM Biorefining. </p> <p class="hugin"><img alt="" class="hugin" height="400" id="Picture 2" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2114413/118995.jpg" width="600" /></p> <p class="hugin">This research was a follow-up to an earlier study from 2013 that looked into the same issues but this was before UPM began production of renewable diesel from CTO. In 2013, the study concluded that <i class="hugin">&quot;sufficient quantities of CTO are available for biodiesel production without the risk to cause Indirect Land Use Change and that CTO should be regarded as residue&quot;. </i>The new Ecofys study proved that the assumptions made in the earlier report were correct and UPM has created a new value chain parallel to existing ones.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;UPM entered the advanced biofuels business in 2015 and became the world's first producer of renewable diesel on a commercial scale from wood by tapping into our own pulp mill residue, Crude Tall Oil. Our entry has been a success, and we continue to investigate new technologies and feedstock,&quot; Janhunen concludes. </p> <p class="hugin">UPM Biofuels is the only biofuel producer that has, in addition to national certification, received both RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) and ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certifications. Urban transport cleans up its act - HSL and Stara shift to renewable fuels onlyAnneli Kunnas, UPM2017-06-06T09:07:00Z<p class="hugin">(UPM, Helsinki, 6 June 2017 at 09&#58;00 EET) - Buses in the Helsinki region and most of machinery and trucks used by the City of Helsinki are switching to waste and residue-based biofuels. Helsinki Region Transport HSL, the City of Helsinki and the producers of renewable fuels involved in the project are all pioneers in carbon-neutral transport. The project is internationally significant. </p> <p class="hugin">Commercial vehicles operated by the City of Helsinki and bus services commissioned by HSL will fully switch to renewable fuels by 2020. This is a pioneering project in global terms. </p> <p class="hugin">The construction services company, Stara, which operates most of the city's vehicles, will be involved from the City of Helsinki's side.</p> <p class="hugin">&quot;Switching to biofuels will markedly reduce carbon dioxide and local particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions. This will have a particularly clear impact on air quality in the center of Helsinki,&quot; says Unit Director <b class="hugin">Sami Aherva</b>, of Stara. </p> <p class="hugin">&quot;Sustainably produced biofuels are playing a major role in reaching the emission targets of Helsinki Region Transport. The BioSata project could accelerate the transition from fossil fuels,&quot; says <b class="hugin">Reijo Mäkinen</b>, Project Director at HSL.</p> <p class="hugin"><img width="600" height="400" class="hugin" id="Picture 1" src="https&#58;//hugin.info/165629/I/2110596/118434.jpg" alt="" /></p> <p class="hugin">The participation of key players in the BioSata project enable a rapid transition to biofuels. HSL, Stara, UPM, Neste, Teboil, St1, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Employment, the Finnish Petroleum and Biofuels Association and the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT are jointly seeking the most extensive possible use of biofuels. The project is part of the Helsinki region's Smart &amp; Clean project, which aims to achieve the most attractive zero-emission mobility in the world.</p> <p class="hugin">The advantage of high-quality liquid biofuels lies in the fact that neither new vehicles nor a new distribution infrastructure are required. Local emissions can be reduced through the targeted use of biofuels. Particulate emissions can be reduced by up to a third, by using renewable diesel in older vehicles and machinery. At best, biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by the production and use of fuel by 80-90 per cent compared to fossil fuels.</p> <p class="hugin">&#160;&quot;Taking into account the number and types of vehicles involved, such as buses, trucks and construction machinery, BioSata is Europe's largest coordinated advanced biofuels project. The project will also involve follow-up measurements. These measurements will cover issues such as fuel performance, impacts on local emissions and energy efficiency, and maintenance needs,&quot; says Research Professor <b class="hugin">Nils-Olof Nylund </b>of VTT, who is in charge of coordinating the project.</p> <p class="hugin">Vehicles serving on HSL's routes in the Helsinki region include around 1,400 buses, which consume about 40,000 tons of fuel each year. Stara's own vehicle fleet uses around 2,000 tons of fuel a year. About 500,000 tons of biofuel are produced in Finland on an annual basis.</p> <p class="hugin">The national energy and climate strategy requires that Finland raise the share of biofuels to 30 per cent of all fuels by 2030. UPM Biofuels gains the world's first RSB certification for wood-based liquid biofuels Minna Kumpu, Tulus Oy2017-05-29T14:02:00Z<p class="hugin">&#160;(UPM, Helsinki, 29 May 2017 at 14&#58;00 EET) - UPM Biofuels has again received a new&#160;acknowledgement of&#160;the sustainability of its value chain by receiving an&#160;RSB (The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials)&#160;certificate for both UPM BioVerno renewable diesel and naphtha, as well as production sidestreams turpentine and pitch. RSB&#160;verifies the sustainability and reliability of feedstock sourcing and production.&#160;</p> <p class="hugin">In RSB certification, the sustainability of biofuels&#160;is evaluated against 12 principles which have been approved by many stakeholders, including NGOs and UN agencies. In addition to the&#160;greenhouse gas savings&#160;compared to fossil fuels, the RSB principles cover biodiversity, human rights and environmental and social responsibility throughout the value chain.</p> <p class="hugin">RSB&#160;is&#160;one of the European Commission's approved voluntary schemes, which can be used to show compliance with&#160;the EU Renewable Energy Directive's sustainability criteria. The green team - The sustainability agenda shows no sign of abatingElina Räihä, UPM2017-05-16T09:00:00Z<p><img src="/PublishingImages/Blogs/upm-lappeenranta-biorefinery-570px.jpg" alt="" style="margin&#58;5px 5px 5px 0px;" /></p><p>Finnish company UPM has recently signed up to become an RSB member – a global standard and certification scheme for sustainable production of biomaterials and biofuels. Here, <strong>Liz Gyekye</strong> catches up with <strong>Maiju Helin</strong>, senior manager responsible for Safety, Sustainability and Quality at UPM Biofuels to discuss its green agenda.<br> <br><strong>What steps did UPM take to become a RSB member?</strong><br> <br>UPM has already for many years been following RSB closely both in terms of monitoring the development of the standard and also taking part in RSB-related discussions, for example in RSB annual assemblies. UPM has also continuously been active with NGO’s like WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) to promote the sustainability aspects around biofuel certification. Last year, UPM took its final steps to become a RSB member. In addition to the membership, we are now in the process of finalising RSB certification. RSB certification verifies that we have all the sustainability, health, safety and environmental management practises in place to comply with RSB requirements. Although we develop our approach continuously and make internal audits regularly, the certification process has provided us a good chance to cross-check the level of our performance in comparison to the RSB standards.<br> <br><strong>What is set to be thenext biggest trend in sustainability?</strong><br> <br>UPM sees the topic of lifecycle greenhouse gas emission reduction remaining an important issue on the climate change agenda. However, robust sustainability criteria for the origin of biomass-based feedstocks together with traceability of supply chains are things that will become more and more important in the future. This will alsobe important for products outside the biofuel market. Additionally, end users are more and more interested in the social responsibility aspects of the supply chain, encouraging producers to consider sustainability from a wider perspective.<br> <br><strong>Why did you pick this scheme to join?</strong><br> <br>UPM promotes sustainability from many angles. UPM holds ISCC-EU and ISCC-PLUS voluntary certificates for its BioVerno renewable diesel and naphtha and is finalising RSB certification. The ISCC and RSB schemes are seen as the two strongest sustainability certification schemes, both having their own strengths and emphasis. ISCC Plus, for example, enabled us to<br>open the bioplastics market segment for our wood-based renewable naphtha. Being able to show compliance with both schemes is even stronger evidence of sustainability in all UPM Biofuel operations.<br> <br><strong>What do you think of the argument that voluntary sustainability schemes should be made mandatory?</strong><br> <br>We find that in most of Europe, voluntary scheme certificates are already a mandatory requirement in cases where one wants to sell biofuels from one Member State to another. However, many Member States have applied additional measures to verify the sustainability of imported biofuels. As the original target of the voluntary schemes was to align requirements across the EU, it is important that any scheme accepted by the EU Commission would also be accepted as such by all Member States.<br> <br><strong>What can be done to convince the public about the sustainability of biofuels and the part they should play in a lowcarbon world post 2020?</strong><br> <br>I truly believe that we need all possible ways to reduce the transport sector’s emissions in the long term. To that end, advanced, sustainable biofuels will have a significant role to play. In the longer term, the focus of biofuels will move from passenger vehicles to heavy duty transport, the marine sector and aviation. It goes without saying that sustainability of the feedstock must be robust for the puzzle to play out, and I’m convinced that is doable. The usage of traditional biofuels competing with food production has already been limited and post 2020 legislation proposals seem very positive for advanced fuels, such as our woodbased BioVerno products.<br> <br>Renewable drop-in fuels that significantly reduce both CO2 and tail pipe emissions, such as NOx and particles, will be favoured.
