(Blog, Sari Mannonen, 2 May 2016) United Nations’ international “World Day of Safety and Health at Work” is held on April 28, and at the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery it was celebrated by organizing, among other things, safety walks.
Safety is high on the priority list of UPM Biorefinery and it is a prerequisite for all the operations. And for good reason – when making UPM BioVerno diesel out of crude tall oil, we are using very high temperatures and pressure at the biorefinery.
The safety day at Lappeenranta Biorefinery was started with safety walk. Several of them were conducted during the day. Also health issues were on the agenda. Occupational health nurse Hanna-Mari Haikola and physiotherapist Anne Ruotsalainen from Dextra were conducting blood pressure measurings and bioimpedance analysis for several active participants.
Developing workplace safety has been one of the main targets for UPM personnel during the past five years. At the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery, it has been the target from the very beginning, even before the commercial production of UPM BioVerno –diesel was started in Kaukas mill site in January 2015.
“At the UPM Biorefinery, safety is an essential part of our work and we invest energy in it every day. It is not enough that you know what you are doing, you also need to understand the effects of our own work to the environment, yourself and the process operations,” says Jaakko Nousiainen, Production Manager of UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery.
UPM’s safety principles are ”safety first”, ”safety starts with me” and ”we can prevent all the accidents”. These principles emphasise the person’s own responsibility for his own safety and his coworkers’ safety every day. Commitment from both the employees and the management in improving workplace safety can be seen in all the UPM businesses.
During the international day of safety and health at work it makes sense that everyone will take some time for evaluating own and co-workers’ safety and estimating if the workplace environment is safe and well organized. Only by committing yourself and by doing together you can make your workplace safer to yourself and to the others.
