All UPM BioVerno products are certified
We are truly committed to sustainability and our liquid biofuels are unique - securing certification under the ISCC, RSB and Finnish national sustainability systems. All our products satisfy the sustainability and traceability criteria of the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
Deepening our commitment to truly sustainable biofuels, we have taken a step further with our RSB low indirect land use change risk certification to show that our products have minimal possible risk of causing indirect emissions.
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) enables use of renewable fuels in transport in accordance with the European Union Directive on renewable energy. It also certifies the sustainability of our operations across the entire production chain.
UPM Biofuels have been granted an extensive ISCC PLUS sustainability certification covering all products from our biorefinery. ISCC PLUS is a sustainability certification system for bio-based materials, such as chemicals, foodstuffs and animal feeds. Our ISCC PLUS certification also includes whole lifecycle greenhouse gas emission calculations for all refinery streams in the same way as ISCC EU certification.
All our products are covered by Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) EU RED certification. RSB certifies the sourcing chain for raw materials as well as the sustainability and reliability of manufacturing based on 12 principles approved by several stakeholders, such as NGOs and UN representatives.
These principles cover such aspects as greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, human rights, and social and environmental responsibility across the entire production chain. RSB EU RED is also one of the voluntary schemes approved by the European Commission for verifying that biofuels comply with European Union sustainability criteria.
“UPM is committed to continue developing the RSB standard in collaboration with RSB’s stakeholders.”
RSB low ILUC risk certification
RSB's voluntary addition adopts a rigorous approach to address negative impacts caused by indirect land use change through a comprehensive set of principles and criteria. RSB low ILUC (indirect land use change) risk certification has been received for crude tall oil, the feedstock for UPM BioVerno renewable fuels production at the Lappeenranta Biorefinery in Finland, and for UPM's cultivation of the Brassica carinata oil crop in Uruguay. The RSB low ILUC risk certification is additional proof of sustainability, showing that UPM feedstocks have a low risk of displacing current biomass production or diverting feedstocks away from other uses.
ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification
We are committed to protect the environment and constantly develop our environmental performance throughout the whole lifecycle of our products. Our Lappeenranta Biorefinery operations have been certified in accordance with ISO 14001 – the international standard specifying requirements for an effective environmental management system.
