Responsible supply chains - doing the right thing together

Responsible sourcing is part of our everyday operations. Ensuring the responsibility of the supply chain forms the foundation of all our activities.

Co-operation with suppliers, transparent requirements and improving our own production ensure responsible and sustainable products for our customers.

In addition to having strong internal procedures, our products are also externally certified. We are equally interested in the environmental, social and economic aspect of responsibility and monitor our partners in all these dimensions.

UPM is seen as a trusted partner and well performing company, and it has also earned external recognition by being ranked in Platinum level in the responsible sourcing assessment by EcoVadis.

The four components of our responsible sourcing collaboration

Internal compliance

Our Code of Conduct and responsible sourcing guidelines are key documents in ensuring internal compliance and the foundation for responsible sourcing.

Transparency

Our supplier requirements are transparent. The UPM Supplier and Third-Party Code outlines our minimum requirements for ethical conduct.

Risk assessment

Our supplier risk assessment is systematic. We conduct supplier due diligence risk assessments and detailed questionnaires.

Supplier development

We strive for continuous and collaborative supplier development through supplier audits, shared development projects and collaboration projects.

Our Code of Conduct forms the framework for all our operations and sets out standards of behaviour for all employees including executives and directors without exception. It covers topics relating to legal compliance and disclosure, conflicts of interest, gifts and anti-bribery, HR practices, human rights issues and environmental matters.

We aim to be a trustworthy business partner and believe that responsible and ethical practices create long-term value for both UPM and its stakeholders. The UPM Supplier and Third-Party Code defines the minimum level of performance that we require from all suppliers and third-party intermediaries.

Responsible sourcing is one of our company-wide responsibility focus areas. UPM’s sourcing experts are trained regularly on all relevant environmental and social issues. One of our specific targets is to increase purchasing from qualified suppliers in order to facilitate systematic risk assessment and continuous auditing based on identified risks.
