Press Release 22.6.2016 13:00 EEST

(UPM, Helsinki, 22 June 2016 at 12:00 EET)  - The co-operation of UPM and the Guides and Scouts of Finland, launched last year, is visible at Roihu 2016 Finnjamboree. UPM is one of the main partners of the event taking place in July and is supplying a significant amount of building material for the Roihu 2016 jamboree and fuel for the camp transport. Timber, plywood and composites will be used in the camp constructions. In addition, the jamboree participants will also receive printing and drawing paper. UPM is supplying wood-based renewable UPM BioVerno diesel and a UPM BioVerno testbus for the transportations of the visiting day.

The Roihu programme is divided into various areas with different themes. In the forest-themed area, the participants will have the chance to innovate their own products using UPM's timber for example. Simultaneously, the young scouts will learn to utilise renewable, recyclable wood-based materials in a new way.

"The material deliveries are essential for the Roihu camp. The jamboree is organised by volunteers. Due to their effort and the corporate support, we will be able to organise a successful event with a wide range of participants," Heikki Otsolampi and Jaakko Piitulainen, Roihu 2016 Camp leaders say.

"It will be interesting to see what kind of new products or business ideas the participants develop from the recyclable wood-based materials. We want to encourage young people to discover new, responsible perspectives for the use of wood raw materials," says Paula Savonen, Manager, Marketing & Customer Support, Wood Sourcing and Forestry, UPM.

The participants can explore new product development ideas with the forest-themed MobiMetsä mobile game which has been developed by UPM and the Guides and Scouts of Finland. In the game, the player runs his/her own forest industry company and grows trees in own forest. Developing own product forms an essential part of the game.

The Roihu co-operation is part of a larger collaboration between UPM and the Guides and Scouts of Finland. Their common objective is to improve young people's relationship with the forest and highlight the forest as a versatile source for wellbeing.

The Roihu 2016 Finnjamboree is the largest youth event in Finland this year. The Roihu collects together 17,000 guides and scouts in Southern Finland, near the town of Hämeenlinna in July. About 3,000 of the participants arrive from abroad. The co-operation of UPM and the Guides and Scouts of Finland is a part of UPM's "Biofore Share and Care" programme. The programme focuses on projects that are relevant to both UPM's business and responsibility goals. The focus areas are: Reading & Learning, Engaging with communities, Responsible water use and Boosting bioinnovations.
